Understanding Disability Benefits: SSDI/SSD and SSI
SSD and SSI are government programs that provide monthly income benefits to eligible disabled individuals. If your medical condition meets the Social Security Administration's definition of disability and is expected to last at least one year (or lead to death), you may be eligible for disability benefits.
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI): Social Security disability provides monthly income benefits to eligible disabled individuals who have been paying into the Social Security system for at least five of the last ten years. (Generally, people who have been lawfully employed and paying taxes have been paying into the system.)
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI): Disabled individuals who lack the work experience (and thus have not paid into the Social Security system) may be eligible for monthly Supplemental Security Income benefits. However, individuals with substantial assets or other family income may not be eligible for SSI.
At Amick & Stevens, Attorneys at Law, we have the detailed knowledge to answer questions about any part of the Social Security process.
